Apex for Youth empowers underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC to unlock their potential and a world of possibility. Through programming focusing on health and well-being, education, and community engagement, Apex for Youth creates transformative social connections and celebrates cultural identity to build the confidence and self-efficacy of future generations.

Apex serves approximately 2,000 students annually from Kindergarten through their post-secondary years. We provide children and young adults with opportunities to develop strong relationships with adults who volunteer as consistent and caring mentors and role models.

JOB OVERVIEW

Apex’s Elementary Programs addresses the educational, physical, and social-emotional needs of elementary students through athletics, enrichment, and emotional support programs. Our programs are led by Apex staff and supported by caring adult volunteers. On Saturday, we run our in-person Elementary Explorers program that engaged students in grades 3-5 in opportunities for team building self-expression, and community exploration through hands-on activities and games.

To support our in-person program in Brooklyn, we are recruiting a part-time Program Facilitator. This role will interact with Apex staff, volunteers, and youth and report to the Brooklyn Elementary Program Manager. This person will oversee a classroom of 5th grade students. The class includes 25 students and 10 volunteers, grouped into 5 small teams as well as a classroom assistant. The ideal candidate has experience working with elementary-aged youth, excellent communication and classroom management skills, and experience with educational programming.

Our sessions take place on Saturday mornings 9:00am-12:30pm from January 27th to May 11th, 2024 in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilitate in-person sessions and support onsite program operations
Supervise students and provide feedback to volunteers
Provide 1:1 support to individual students when needed
Build and maintain positive relationships with youth, volunteers and staff
Collaborate and communicate with Apex staff during sessions
Meet with Apex staff during the week to discuss previous sessions and student concerns
Review and modify prepared lessons and materials as needed for upcoming sessions
Submit weekly timesheets to the program supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with educational programming or youth development
Experience working with youth, experience with elementary-aged students preferred
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision
HS diploma required; Bachelor’s degree or some college experience a plus
Must be authorized to work in the United States
All employees working with children are subject to a background check
Chinese Mandarin language skills is a plus

Pay Range: This role offers $25 per hour and would require 3-4 hours on Saturday mornings and 1-2 hours during the week. Hours during the week can be scheduled to accommodate the candidate’s schedule. This position will run from January 27 to May 11, 2024, with 10 Saturday sessions held during that time.
